💡 Sensory Awareness for Inclusive Education: Understanding How the Senses Impact Learning
Unlock a deeper understanding of student behaviour and enhance your classroom support strategies.
This essential training introduces you to the theory and practice of Sensory Awareness, empowering you to create an optimal learning environment for every student.
What is Sensory Awareness?
Sensory awareness is the ability to perceive, interpret, and respond to information from all our senses—not just the traditional five (sight, sound, touch, taste, smell), but also the internal senses that govern our bodies:
- Proprioception: Our sense of body position and movement (e.g., how much force to use, where our limbs are).
- Vestibular: Our sense of balance and movement (e.g., feeling stable, regulating alertness).
- Interoception: Our internal body awareness (e.g., recognizing hunger, thirst, or strong emotions).
What You Will Learn:
- Decode Behavior: Understand how differences in sensory processing (e.g., being over- or under-sensitive to stimuli) can be the hidden cause behind behaviors like fidgeting, distraction, meltdowns, or withdrawal.
- Identify Sensory Needs: Learn to look for “sensory clues” in your students and identify their individual thresholds for different inputs (e.g., loud noises, bright lights, certain textures).
- Implement Practical Strategies: Acquire a toolkit of simple, evidence-based sensory strategies and supports (like wobble cushions, visual breaks, or calm spaces) to help students regulate their arousal levels and reach a “just right” state for focusing and learning.
- Promote Self-Regulation: Discover how to teach students to recognize and communicate their own sensory needs, fostering independence and emotional well-being in the classroom and beyond.
Join us to transform your perspective on student support, moving from managing behaviour to understanding and meeting underlying sensory needs.
